Making the right choice for your needs

If you’re in the marketplace to buy a new sleeping bag, you’re sure to have found there are a huge number out there these days. The level of choice can be quite bewildering. The purpose of this guide is to help you choose the right sleeping bag for your requirements and maybe save you some money along the way.

When choosing a suitable bag it is important to consider what you will need it for. This can depend on what kind of trip you are undertaking, and the circumstances you predict for your sleeping conditions. For example, if you simply want a sleeping bag for hygiene purposes while staying at hostels, you probably won’t need to spend a great deal of money. If on the other hand you are doing some light mountaineering, or are setting off on an adventure in some far flung jungle, you may want a bag that stands up to slightly more versatile or specialised requirements.

    Your Requirements at Camp

    Cheap, Basic and Classic Bags

The classic rectangular shaped sleeping bag is the kind that most of us remember, known as an ‘envelope’ style bag it is also the type of bag that you will encounter the most at the bottom end of the market. Plenty of companies make perfectly good low priced bags alongside their premium offerings, including Vango and Coleman. These types of bag are ideal for festival goers and family camping, as well as being able to double up as spare bedding when you have guests.

    Designs for Trekking and Camping

For longer camping trips and those that involve sleeping in lower temperatures, a slightly more advanced sleeping bag may be useful. Often known as 2/3 season sleeping bags, these will keep you warm and comfortable even in temperatures down to minus zero. You’ll be looking to spend a little more on a bag of this type, but view it as an investment and its versatility will pay off in years to come.

    Expedition and Mountaineering Bags

For the most extreme conditions like those in mountaineering or in Arctic temperatures, then it is essential to buy a sleeping bag that can stand up to the job and keep you not only warm but safe. These kind are considered ‘expedition’ quality, with some by British company Rab withstanding the cold down to -67 degrees. This can be achieved with a down fill that also reduces weight considerably, essential in a mountaineering situation. Be prepared to pay top dollar for a bag like this, as in a survival situation it could be the difference between life and death
