Okay, so you’re driving to the gig and getting out the money for the bridge and realize, “I don’t have my mutes with me!” So you pay the toll, cross the bridge, make a u-turn, get a dirty look from the state trooper, cross the bridge again and head home. You go into your house and can only find the very first trumpet cup mute you ever bought. You think to yourself, “This is junk. I can’t play on this!” but you’re running late so you drive to the gig anyway. Now you get dirty looks from the director and since you’re late he thinks you’re a trombone player. All through the job you keep think, “I need to buy a new mute that just sounds great, instead of this piece of… Oh I missed a Que!”.
Has this happened to you? Choosing the best trumpet cup mute can be easy and fun. The trumpet cup mute looks similar to the straight mute except that there is a complete covering of the bell. This covering causes a significant quieting of the trumpet sound and creates a warm gentle tone. The cup mute for trumpet is great for big band dance music and solo ballads.
Many excellent manufacturers such as Bach, Denis Wick, Jo Ral, Tom Crown, Leblanc Vacchiano and Yamaha manufacture quality cup mutes for the trumpet. The key is trying each one out and note the differences or similarities. Let your ears be the judge.
There are two significantly different cup mutes, that being the fixed and the adjustable cup. The fixed cup does not move up or down the straight part of the mute. Where are the adjustable cup does move up and down the straight part of the mute. For example the Jo Ral cup mute has a fixed cup and includes several thick felt inserts, which you can add or remove, affecting the tone quality and volume projection. With all of the felt inserted I have used this as a practice mute late at night. It makes the trumpet sound very quiet.
The adjustable cup mute is manufactured by The Denis Wick Company. The adjustable cup moves up and down the straight part of the mute in order for the player to vary the sound, volume and tonal quality. This moveable cup is easy and fast. If you push the cup tightly against the bell you will get a quiet stopped, however rich trumpet sound. Move the cup farther down the shaft, away from the bell, and hear a louder rich “Big Band” sound.
