Over the years I’ve spoken with a number of people about the need for a smaller than twin size bed. Often these individuals are trying to find something that can work for a cabin, for a small room or a tight space where typical beds just don’t seem to fit. Another need I’ve heard is to try and maximize the number of beds that can be placed into one room. The solution would be a bed size less wide than a standard twin but would have the same length and we refer to this in the industry as a cot size.

Cot size originates from the army cot or camp cot size which provides a sleeping surface of 30″ x 75″. Compare that to a standard twin size at 39″ x 75″ and its pretty easy to see that there is 9″ difference in width between the two. Consider that two of these beds in the same room would take up 18″ less space than two twin size beds. While cot size isn’t considered a standard bed size like twin, full, queen or king it offers dimensional advantages for a room using especially when most sizes of beds just won’t fit.

This size of bed doesn’t have to be minimal in design or comfort. One of the manufacturers we work with Nomad Furniture has developed a series of beds with headboards as well as a cot size daybed series. These beds incorporate a slat support system and are also available with customizable options that can increase the height of the headboard or designed for more space beneath the bed. Optional bed drawers on castors can be ordered which are independent of the bed system and simply roll beneath the beds. Our local mattress manufacturer has also designed a comfortable daily use 8 in. high density foam mattress for these beds so that individuals don’t have to sacrifice comfort by having a premium mattress option.
